Nug's Corner: Kid Happy Trail Mix

I  happen to know that more than one individual in my house likes his trail mix. And while Nug doesn't really like the concept of traditional cereal, a bowl and a spoon sans milk works just fine for him. Which is OK with me since this is still a great nutritious breakfast or a healthy snack alternative.

Just don't go replacing the ingredients with regular old Cheerios. You are better off with an organic version or gluten free. Kellogg's and General Mills and all the mainstream food companies load their products with GMO's and preservatives and your kids ( or your handsome hubby) don't need to be ingesting that crap!

Also make sure when you purchase your dried fruit that you are avoiding products that contain sulfites, GMO sugar, pesticides and preservatives. It is important to buy organic raisins because after all, they are just dried grapes which are a heavy pesticide crop. While cranberries are not a large concern in terms of pesticides, you will be hard pressed to find a non-organic version without added sugar due to their tartness. I am concerned about those sweetened with apple juice since apples themselves are a heavy pesticide crop, naturally contain large levels of inorganic arsenic, and could also be sweetened with GMO sugar.

So if the fresh version of fruit contains pesticides, can you imagine how concentrated those pesticides are in your little pieces of dried fruit? It's not hard to find organic versions which will only run you slightly more $$, (I shop at Market Basket and Whole Foods, two totally different food demographic locations) So make sure to consult the EWG's Dirty Dozen list when purchasing your fresh or dried fruits and don't be CHEAP! Spending money on good, clean, safe food is less costly than health insurance in the long run.

Recipe:

1 cup gluten free whole O's (I use Nature's Path which somewhere down the operating cycle is owned by a larger No-No Corporation, but still is a healthier alternative than the norm)
1/2 cup organic Thompson raisins
1/2 cup organic cranberries
1/4 cup raw hulled sunflower seeds
1/4 cup raw pumpkin seeds
Optional: 70% or higher Cacao nibs

Directions

Measure above ingredients, mix together, and store in an airtight container. Double, triple, or quadruple if necessary.
